Agility dog safety is an important consideration when you are first starting out in agility dog training. In fact, safety is the reason for the recommendations that a dog understand the basics of obedience training and simple commands. The biggest threat to safety at a dog agility competition is all the dogs that are in attendance. If an owner loses control over one dog, it’s a domino effect for all the other dogs and their owners.
Making sure your dog is in good health and mature enough to handle the rigors of competition is another way to ensure the safety of your dog during agility training and competition. If you start a dog in agility training when they are too young, their joints and muscles aren’t developed enough and it can result in permanent injury as they mature.
Dog agility safety also requires that your dog be mentally ready to train and attend a competition because a nervous or easily distracted dog has a higher risk of behaving badly in that situation.
Safety in dog agility training starts with a mentally and physically mature dog that’s trained in basic obedience that will listen to your commands.
