Here are some agility dog training tips that will help you to teach your dog to focus on your hands, which is an important skill in dog agility training. Your dog must be able to focus on your hands during dog agility competitions because there may be times when you are stumbling over vocal commands and the dog may get confused. If you are supplementing your hand movements with voice commands, your dog will always be able to follow your directions, no matter what comes out of your mouth.
Here’s a game to play with your dog that will help him or her develop this skill. Place a treat in your hands but cup it with your thumb while extending your fingers. Move your hand in an arc either away from your body or towards your body so that your dog is following your hands movement. When he’s followed your hands successfully, give him the treat and start over again.
Your dog must learn the obstacles before you can start them running through the course. Start with the least intimidating obstacle for your dog. Only you can figure that one out because every dog is different, just like humans! Some people are bothered by heights, while others aren’t. Same thing with dogs; some dogs like to jump and others don’t.
Approach each obstacle carefully and use your hands and voice to indicate where you want the dog to enter the obstacle and that you want them to either go through it or over it. For instance, you may have to get down on the ground at the other end of a tunnel to get them to go through it.
When working through one of the more complicated dog walks, you might have to start at the end and then move them forward a little bit at a time so they can feel confident in their ability to get off when needed.
