What Makes a Healthy Agility Dog?

If you want your dog to perform it’s best as an agility dog, you need to make sure it’s in good health. Overweight or obese dogs who try to do agility will be more prone to injury. Get your dog in shape by providing him or her with good, nutritional dog food and start them exercising to lose the extra pounds before starting with agility training. You should also stop feeding them scraps from the table to make sure they don’t put those pounds back on. A diet of table scraps is high in fat, salt and carbohydrates which is not good for them plus it makes them a pickier eater.

A healthy agility dog will be up to date on their vaccinations and not have any internal parasites. A check by your veterinarian is a good idea before you start training your dog for agility competitions to make sure they are in good physical shape. Make sure your dog doesn’t have hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, OCD (osteochondrosis dissecans) or any other bjoint or bone disease. Arthritis can also be a problem for some dogs but there are medications available that can help and still allow your dog to particiapte in agility training.

Sometimes dogs can have allergies that will affect their performance on the agility course. Itchy skin can make a dog miserable and distracted as well as cause soreness because of skin and joint irritation.
