Most agility dog owners love it when their dogs jump! It means that their dog is doing what he’s supposed to be doing as an agility dog.
But there are times when jumping is a bad idea for even an agility dog. Such as when they’re at home and the next door neighbor stops by. That is definitely not the time to jump!
If you’re a seasoned agility dog owner, you probably don’t have this problem. An obedient dog is one of the prerequisites for a good agility dog.
But if you’re just starting out in agility, this may be one of the behaviors that’s holding your dog back from agility greatness. Here’s some information I found recently about how to train your dog not to jump that may help you understand what your dog is doing when he jumps and what you can do to stop it.
Step one is to look at how you can diminish his excitement at least a little when he encounters someone else. If you can help him make a habit of being calmer, he’ll be much better able to focus on your instructions.
The second helpful trick is to reduce his worry over not being able to reach your face. Bending down to greet him helps. He won’t feel it’s up to him to close the distance by jumping.
The third step is to extend this habit of calm behavior. Keep rough-housing to a minimum. Teach him to play more gently, so he won’t think there’s a connection between being rough and being happy all the time.
The fourth step is to train your dog to respond to the sit command. Not only that, use the command every single day, whenever it is appropriate. Praise him enthusiastically when he obeys.
When it comes to training a bad behavior out of your dog, consistency is the key. Practicing these steps consistently will establish a feeling of calmness the next time your next door neighbor drops by.
