You can still practice your dog agility training in the winter time. We are lucky because we live in Florida and can be outdoors comfortably all year around. But even if you live in an area where snow is on the ground almost all year long, you need to just get creative about your training locations.
Believe it or not, you can train in a hallway, basement, or garage! Before it snows and your equipment is frozen to the ground, store several throughout your garage, shed, basement, or put a tarp over it. Just take it off whenever your ready to train.
One good piece of equipment to train on indoors is the Pause Table. It’s the best obstacle for developing your obedience behaviors and training your dog in following agility training directions.
You can also work on your contacts indoors. Take a small square piece of vinyl or wood and practice two paws on and two paws off.
Indoor jumping should be approached carefully. When you don’t have indoor matting, do not jump because you could injure your dog. But you can use the uprights or posts to practice your handling.
Weaves can be practiced indoors. Are you training with a weave-chute or straight line weaves? Five minutes a day of weave training during the winter will have your dog weaving smoothly with springtime. You could also practice weave entries and weave sends or weave recalls.
There is also a variety of mini agility equipment that can be bought, and you do not need to have the same space as competition-sized equipment. There are mini-teeters, mini-dog walks, and mini-A-frames. These are great obstacles for puppy training or indoor winter teaching.
Just by using your imagination a little, you can still do dog agility training indoors this winter, whether you’re starting out with a novice dog, or an experienced titled dog.
